The Birth of Pickleball: Pickleball was born on Bainbridge Island, Washington, during the summer of 1965. Three friends, Joel Pritchard, Bill Bell, and Barney McCallum, were looking for a way to keep their families entertained. They improvised a game using a badminton court, lowered net, and handmade wooden paddles. The game was named pickleball after the Pritchard family dog, Pickles, who would chase after the ball.
